Artistic Direction

from September 2025 / in advance part-time from 2024.

For nearly 45 years, the NKO has been inventing musical theater works that are an alternative to the usual repertory of many opera houses: Located in Berlin’s most vital and in every way diverse district, we create works that address socially relevant issues in an accessible way. It is important to us to address an audience that is as diverse as possible, to offer high artistic quality and to be free in our choice of means of expression: (music) theater at the NKO is a place that enables shared experience, discussion and exchange about current social issues from a wide variety of communities.
With this approach, the NKO has established itself as a private theater funded by the Senate in the legal form of a non-profit association, which currently presents 6-8 world premieres on approximately 200 performance days per year. The house with its 16 permanent employees is managed by a three-member board of directors. In the course of an age succession, we are looking for the new Artistic Director, with whom we want to continue to shape the house for the future and also develop new concepts.

Your tasks will include:

  • Creation of a playbill,
  • Addressing suitable persons for the creative teams and performing artists of the individual productions,
  • Accompanying the rehearsal processes,
  • scouting in the area of promoting young talent.
  • Networking with important actors/institutions of the music theater scene.

We would like to invite all interested persons – individuals as well as team members – to apply with a meaningful CV and first concept ideas for the NKO of the future.

We are looking forward to interesting personalities with musical theater experience, who are not afraid to look beyond their own genre, who are team players and willing to cooperate, and who know the (music) theater scene in Berlin and beyond well.

We will work with you within the framework of an initial five-year contract, whereby your own artistic activity can also be made possible outside of the NKO. In return, we will offer you an appropriate salary. In order to optimize the transition, we ask that you initially start part-time in 2024 and switch to full-time at a date yet to be determined in 2025.
Meaningful documents as well as initial conceptual thoughts (max. 8,000 characters) on how you would like to shape the future of the Neuköllner Oper in Berlin should be sent to the Executive Board of the Neuköllner Oper at vorstand@neukoellneroper.de by October 30, 2023.

The Artistic Director, together with the Commercial Director and the Director of Public Relations, form the Directorate, which reports to the Board of Directors. The board supervises, among other things, the economic and performance schedules, controls the economic management of the NKO and advises on marketing and artistic matters.

The Artistic Director is selected by the Board of Directors, the Management Committee and two external experts.

We explicitly encourage all professionally suitable and interested applicants* to send in an application, regardless of their origin, skin color, gender or gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, disability or age.

Initial selection and familiarization interviews are scheduled between late November and mid-December 2023. Interviews with a shortlist will be held on site in Berlin in January / February.
