With a theater that seeks to merge art and life, dispenses with all decoration, and demands existential commitment from performers, Poland became one of the leading countries in the international theater avant-garde of the 1960s. In the context of current discussions about the distribution of power in theater and strategies of mindfulness in the production process, the fame of those years is now undergoing a critical re-evaluation. To what extent do the invited theater makers still see themselves within the tradition of the avant-garde of that time? Where do they distance themselves, where do they assert new and different ideas? How do the invited composers situate the role of their music and its relationship to theater? With questions concerning their personal experiences of Polish performances in the festival, the audience will also have a say.
