NO minimalism without maximalism
What does it feel like to be abducted by aliens, then transported back to Earth and continue your life as if nothing ever happened? Philip Glass and David Henry Hwang explore this question in their 1988 science-fiction chamber opera 1000 Airplanes on the Roof.
Director Paige Eakin Young transfers the work of the godfather of minimalist music to a contemporary world and stage. Drawing from her own experiences of living as a trans women, Eaking Young’s main character M. – played by singer and performer Mara Snip – takes back control of her own story. Looking back on her experience, she tries to make sense of the event, her feelings and the impact it will have on her future. In search of joy and empowerment, she celebrates her experience of otherness and transition. At the same time, she playfully invites the audience to change their ways of seeing, listening and experiencing. And in doing so, she challenges us all to be aware that our perception is also our tool for writing stories.
