BAM!, Berlin’s festival for contemporary music theatre, asks in its current edition: Where do we go from here? How is Berlin’s independent music scene responding to the rapid societal and global changes – and what artistic forms is it exploring to do so? The festival opens with a warm welcome from the organizers and guests at the Neuköllner Oper, followed by the concert EP FOR A DEAF POET AND DOUBLE BASS by Łukasz Owczynnikow and Adam Stoyanov.
“Ep” is the written form of a sign created by the deaf community in Warsaw that has no equivalent in spoken language. Its meaning can be vaguely described as “uncool, uncomfortable, strange, weird”. EP FOR A DEAF POET AND DOUBLE BASS is a piece about otherness (the “otherness” of contemporary new music is contrasted with the “otherness” of deaf culture) and about the feeling of alienation experienced by marginalized minorities in our society.
