Ullmann’s one-act opera Der Kaiser von Atlantis did not get the chance to be performed in the Theresienstadt ghetto. Although both the composer and his librettist were murdered in Auschwitz, the documents relating to the piece were saved. As a result, the opera had its world premiere in Amsterdam in 1975 and, in 1989, a landmark production directed by Winfried Radeke at the Neuköllner Oper.
As a publication of the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel, a facsimile edition has just been released, making the surviving sources accessible in brilliant print quality. The editor, Heidy Zimmermann, is coming to Berlin to present this lavish volume. Her talk will be supplemented by a roundtable discussion with Winfried Radeke and Albrecht Dümling, as well as musical examples featuring Gesine Nowakowsky and Andreas Jocksch (vocals) and Hans Peter Kirchberg (piano).
